Protection concept

A fully protected passenger cell

The complete passenger cabin is armored: all side walls, doors, pillars and the roof, the front bulkhead towards the engine bay, the cargo area and the rear door. An armoring cage is integrated into the passenger cell, including the A, B and C pillars, and all edges and seams are closed by an overlap system designed to minimize gaps.

All doors use a 100% overlap system for maximum strength at door posts and pillars. The transparent armor is multilayer ballistic glass with a polycarbonate layer that virtually eliminates spalling. Critical components are protected as well: a self-sealing fuel tank, the ECU and a leak-proof AGM battery.

The program

One base vehicle, three protection concepts

TRASCO has built the armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in three protection concepts, matched to the threat level and the purpose of the vehicle: from discreet lightweight protection for everyday use to full armoring and the extended VIP version.

Light armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG with A-KIP® protection

Your everyday guard

A-KIP® lightweight armoring, level 4

Protection against attacks with handguns and blunt instruments such as hammers or rocks in the protected areas, using only certified ballistic glass, ballistic steel and composite materials. The additional weight is only approx. 150 kg, so handling, comfort and appearance of the original vehicle are preserved and registration is simple.

Certification

Certified ballistic materials, tested by VPAM laboratories

The opaque and transparent armor materials are tested and certified to VPAM-PM 7 by government-approved German test laboratories of the VPAM (association of test laboratories for bullet resistant materials and constructions). VPAM guidelines reflect actual attack patterns: higher test velocities than the former CEN standards and a more realistic multi-hit pattern.

VR9 adds protection against the 7.62×51 mm armor-piercing round with a hard core. The underbody protects against two simultaneously ignited DM51 hand grenades placed under the passenger compartment. The complete threat table below documents every weapon, caliber and test condition.

TRASCO Engineering

Re-engineered in Bremen

The additional weight of full armoring changes everything a vehicle has to carry, stop and open. TRASCO re-engineers the chassis, doors and wheels in-house, so the armored SUV keeps the proven reliability of its base vehicle.

Armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG: heavy-duty door hinge mounted on the armored pillar

Doors and hinges

The doors are extensively redesigned: self-engineered heavy-duty hinges are bolted directly onto the armor at the A and B pillars, door check straps are upgraded, and additional latches are fitted. The doors open and close as easily as on the standard vehicle.

Armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG: reinforced heavy-duty suspension with upgraded control arm

Suspension

To guarantee reliability and road safety, the entire suspension system is reinforced: shock absorbers, sway bars and springs are replaced by heavy-duty components, including upgraded control arms.

Armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG: high performance brakes behind the heavy-duty rim

Brakes

Due to the increased weight, specially manufactured high performance brake discs, calipers and pads ensure optimum braking performance at all times and prevent fading.

Armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG: heavy-duty rim with run-flat system

Tires, rims and run-flat

Special tires with an increased load index on heavy-duty rims designed for the additional payload. A run-flat insert in all four wheels allows emergency driving after a puncture for up to 15 km at 50 km/h.

Armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG: cockpit and interior after armoring

Door panels and interior

All door panels are redesigned and remanufactured in-house to compensate for the armor thickness, finished to the standard of the factory interior.

Armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG: engine bay with fire suppression system

Protected components

Critical components are protected: a self-sealing fuel tank, the electronic control unit behind ballistic steel, and a leak-proof AGM battery. An engine bay fire suppression system is available.

FAQ

Questions about the armored SUV

Your question is not listed? Our team will be glad to help.

Which protection levels are available?

The armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG is available in VPAM VR7 and VR9. VR7 protects against assault rifle ammunition such as 7.62×51 mm and 5.56×45 mm; VR9 adds protection against the 7.62×51 mm armor-piercing round with a hard core. A lightweight A-KIP® version in level 4 (in the protected areas) has also been built.

Is the complete passenger cabin armored?

Yes. All side walls, doors, pillars, the roof, the front bulkhead, the cargo area and the rear door are armored. Edges and seams are closed by an overlap system, and all doors use a 100% overlap design at door posts and pillars.

Is the underbody protected against explosives?

Yes. The floor protects against two simultaneously ignited DM51 hand grenades placed under the passenger compartment.

How is the ballistic glass built?

The transparent armor is multilayer ballistic glass with a polycarbonate layer that virtually eliminates spalling. It provides multi-hit protection and includes UV protection. Heated and tinted versions are available.

How does the vehicle handle the additional weight?

TRASCO re-engineers the chassis: reinforced suspension with heavy-duty shock absorbers, sway bars and springs, high performance brakes, special tires with an increased load index on heavy-duty rims, and redesigned doors with heavy-duty hinges.

What happens after a puncture?

All four wheels carry a run-flat insert. After a puncture the vehicle can continue for up to 15 km at 50 km/h to leave the danger zone.

Does the vehicle look different from the standard model?

Hardly. The armored SUV is nearly visually identical to the standard vehicle, so unwanted attention while traveling is avoided.

Is a right-hand drive version available?

Yes. The armored SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG is available as both LHD and RHD.

Is there an extended version?

Yes. The VIP SUV XXLong is based on the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG with an extended wheelbase, enlarged rear doors, an armored sliding roof and a multifunctional partition wall.
