Protection concept

A fully armored passenger cell

The complete passenger cabin is armored in VR7: sidewalls, doors, pillars, roof, floor, front bulkhead and tailgate. An armoring cage with A, B and C pillars is integrated into the passenger cell, with overlaps at every joint, and all passenger doors use a 100 % overlap system. The transparent armor uses special quality laminated safety glass produced by European glass manufacturers, 43 mm thick; the side windows behind the rear doors are backed by ballistic steel and tinted.

Critical components are protected as well: one or two armored batteries, a self-sealing fuel tank and an armored engine control unit. Door arresters and hinges are reinforced and mounted directly to the armoring cage. The VR7 version is built to the protection design of the certified Toyota Land Cruiser 300, including blast protection: DM31 mine and HG85 hand grenades under the floor, HG85 and DM51 hand grenades on the roof, and side blast with 12.5 kg PETN (15 kg TNT equivalent) at 4 m and at 2 m.

Certification

Certified ballistic materials, documented threat levels

The armoring uses ballistic materials tested and certified according to VPAM-PM 2007 by government-approved German VPAM test laboratories. The Lexus LX 600 is available from VR7 up to VR9, and up to STANAG 4569 level 2 according to the current ballistic guidelines. The VR7 version is built to the protection design of the certified Toyota Land Cruiser 300, which was tested as a complete vehicle at the official German proof house in Mellrichstadt.

VR8 adds protection against the 7.62×39 mm armor-piercing incendiary round of the AK-47 and a 20 mm fragment simulating projectile; VR9 against the 7.62×51 mm armor-piercing round with a hard core. The complete threat table below documents every weapon, caliber and test condition.
