A-KIP® protection concept

Protection where it matters most

The A-KIP® concept →

A-KIP® (Anti-Kidnapping Protection) is deliberate lightweight protection of the critical areas of the cabin against typical criminal attack scenarios such as kidnapping and robbery. Certified ballistic glass, steel and composites protect the windshield, the side windows and doors and the roof; the protection level applies in the protected areas.

The vehicle stays within its original gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Airbags and driver assistance systems remain active, validated in physical crash tests, and the interior is trimmed in OEM fabrics: the only visible difference is a small plaque on the dashboard trim.

  • Cockpit and ballistic windshield of the Defender with A-KIP® protection

    Protected front windshield

Ballistic glass certified to VPAM-PM 4 or PM 6. The front camera, the driver assistance systems and, if fitted to the base vehicle, the windshield heating are retained.

  • Ballistic glass in the front door of the Defender with A-KIP® protection

    Protected door glass

All four side door windows in ballistic glass certified to VPAM-PM 4 or PM 6.

  • Rear door with certified ballistic materials, Defender with A-KIP® protection

    Protected front and rear doors

All front and rear side doors are protected with ballistic materials certified to VPAM-PM 4 or PM 6.

  • Rear seats and protected roof area of the Defender 110 with A-KIP® protection

    Protected main roof area

The main roof area including the Alpine windows is protected with ballistic steel and special composites to VPAM-PM 4 or PM 6. On the Defender 130, level 4 adds a certified multi-layer security film with UV filter to the panoramic roof, which stays in use; in level 6 the main roof is ballistic against attack at 30° and the panoramic roof is closed.

  • Ballistic partition wall with glass window behind the rear seats of the Defender 110 with A-KIP® protection

    Rear partition wall (Defender 110)

A ballistic partition wall with an integrated ballistic glass window behind the rear seats protects the rear. All materials certified to VPAM-PM 4 or PM 6.

  • Defender 110 with A-KIP® protection, doors open with a view of the protected footwell

    Protected underbody (Defender 110)

Blast and fragmentation protection in the footwell floor area, standard on the Defender 110. For the Defender 130 available as an option.

The program

Two body styles, one protection concept

A-KIP® is available for the Defender 110 and the Defender 130, in level 4 against handguns or level 6 against assault rifle ammunition of the AK-47, in the protected areas.

Certification

Certified ballistic materials, documented threat levels

Every A-KIP® protection component is tested and certified individually by government-approved German VPAM test laboratories according to VPAM-APR 2006 and VPAM-PM 2007, each with test report and certificate. In the protected areas, level 4 withstands handguns up to .44 Magnum and level 6 the 7.62×39 mm PS Ball round of the AK-47.

EU single vehicle approval via TÜV is available as an option; for the United Kingdom, DVSA IVA Category T.

FAQ

Questions about the Defender protected by TRASCO

Your question is not listed? Our team will be glad to help.

What is A-KIP®?

A-KIP® (Anti-Kidnapping Protection) is lightweight ballistic protection for the Defender 110 and 130, engineered and converted by TRASCO in Bremen. Certified ballistic glass, steel and composites protect the critical areas of the cabin in level 4 or level 6.

trasco-akip.com →
Who is authorized to protect the Defender?

Trasco Bremen GmbH holds the official Accredited Converter status of Jaguar Land Rover for the protected Defender, documented on landrover.com and in the Jaguar Land Rover media center. The Defender protected by TRASCO is available to order exclusively from TRASCO.

Cooperation with Jaguar Land Rover →
Which protection levels are available?

Level 4 against handguns up to .44 Magnum and Level 6 against the 7.62×39 mm round of the AK-47, in the protected areas. All components are tested and certified by government-approved German VPAM test laboratories.

Can it be distinguished from a standard Defender?

Hardly. Inside and out, the protected Defender is virtually indistinguishable from a standard vehicle; the only visible difference is a small plaque on the dashboard trim. Because discretion is often the best form of defense, the A-KIP® concept is inconspicuous by design, so the Defender blends in with normal traffic.

Do airbags and driver assistance systems remain active?

Yes. Airbags and driver assistance systems remain active. This was validated in a static test of the curtain airbag deployment, a physical pole side impact and the European legal side impact test.

Is special driver training or extra maintenance needed?

No. The protected Defender drives like the standard vehicle, needs no additional driver training and no maintenance beyond the standard service schedule.

How is the vehicle serviced?

Through the Jaguar Land Rover service network, supported by TRASCO service and spare parts and the mobile TRASCO service team.

Service & spare parts →
Can TRASCO handle the export?

Yes. Base vehicles are supplied in the market specification of the destination country; TRASCO handles the export and supports the registration.

Is a special driving license needed?

No. The vehicle stays within its original gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), so a class B license is sufficient, and no chassis or brake upgrades are required.

Which warranty applies?

TRASCO grants a 2-year warranty on all A-KIP® modifications and protection components, including all opaque and transparent ballistic materials; the base vehicle warranty of JLR remains (currently 5 years or 150,000 km, depending on the market).

Does A-KIP® replace a fully armored vehicle?

No. A-KIP® is deliberately partial lightweight protection for typical criminal attack scenarios and complements fully armored vehicles. For higher threat levels, fully certified armored vehicles such as the TRASCO Toyota Land Cruiser 300 VR7 remain the appropriate choice.
